BA Jazz Audition Requirements:

Please note: these Jazz B.A. programs require a pre-screen audition video from all incoming applicants. You will upload your video directly onto our Â鶹AV Music audition platform that will be emailed to you after you complete your CSU application. Do not start your music audition without your Â鶹AV ID#. Allow time to complete your CSU application and then your Music application.

• Spring 2026 admission: PRESCREEN is due by 11:59 PM (PST) Sunday SEP 21st.
• Fall 2026 admission: PRESCREEN is due by 11:59 PM (PST) Friday JAN 9th.

Results of the pre-screen round will be e-mailed to students by January 31. At that time, those who passed the pre-screen round will be able to schedule their on-campus final round audition on our Audition Days.ÌýNOTE: for some programs, passing your pre-screen will move you to your second stage, such as an interview. Music Education students with a jazz focus should plan ahead for an in-person final round.

• Spring 2026 admission: FINAL ROUND AUDITION: Saturday OCT 25th, 2025
• Fall 2026 admission: FINAL ROUND AUDITIONS: Saturdays FEB 7, 21 or 28th, 2026

1.ÌýÌýÌýAll applicants: Major scales in all 12 keys, minimum of 2 octaves per scale. For drummers, please play these on a mallet instrument or piano.

2.ÌýÌýÌýAll applicants: One of the following jazz standards. Demonstrate your ability to play a melody with good time feel, function in a traditional manner on your instrument, and improvise for two choruses.ÌýDo not exceed 5 minutes on this recorded tune.ÌýFor Pianists and Guitarists: Accompany the melody with chordal support on your instrument.Ìý

3.ÌýÌýÌýFor Drummers: Record 8 measures of the following styles: swing, rock, funk, and Latin groove of your choice.

4.ÌýÌýÌýOptional for all applicants: One additional piece of your choice that demonstrates your musical interests. Do not exceed 5 minutes on this recorded piece.
