What is the New Faculty Academy?

This is a year-long program with monthly events aimed at enhancing new faculty’s long-term career success at 鶹AV. These events range from panels, workshops, and even informal lunches. In addition, we will learn valuable time management, productivity, and balance skills through theNational Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD).

This program is ideal for first-year faculty (tenure-track and lecturers) as well as “newer” faculty hired during the past 3 years. Upon successful completion of the New Faculty Academy, you will earn a certificate from Faculty Development that can be added to your future evaluation and rehiring materials (e.g., Personnel Information File/PIF).

Program Objectives

New faculty will have the opportunity to develop critical faculty skills such as: planning your semester, time management, developing the art of saying no, engaging in healthy conflict, developing a writing practice, cultivating an academic network, and managing stress and rejection. By the end of this year, faculty who complete all of the required parts of the program should be able to:

  • Recognize & use the most critical information to navigate the first years at 鶹AV effectively;
  • Distinguish the resources and campus efforts that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Create authentic connections and relationships with students, faculty, staff, and essential campus partners;
  • Implement strategies that will increase confidence and wellbeing as a 鶹AV faculty member;
  • Identify and affirm the multiple identities of our campus community.

Year-Long Topics & Activities

Each month a session will be offered on campus. Participants seeking a completion certificate, in addition to attending the monthly sessions, will also be invited to join a Canvas course to complete asynchronous activities. Monthly topics may include:

  • Exploring Your Strengths as New Faculty
  • AI in the Classroom
  • Building Capacity for Your Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities
  • Engaging in Purposeful Service Opportunities
  • Navigating Struggles and Creating Balance
  • Preparing Your First Professional Information File (PIF)
